Love & torment, ecstasy & agony. While it drives mere mortals mad, Italian tenor Massimo Giordano dedicated his first solo disc of Italian arias, launching in May, Amore e Tormento, to the universal dichotomy.

In the run-up to May’s bounty, he chatted about his latest projects and aspirations for OC’s column — The thrill of titling Don Carlo at Maggio Musicale in May; his biggest idols from the rich legacy of Italian tenors; the evolution of one of his latest roles, Cavaradossi, across opera’s most influential stages; his thoughts on Puccini; and the challenges/rewards of recording his first solo CD.
